LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES STAR WILL ACCEPT SPECIAL AWARD RECOGNIZING EXTRAORDINARY CHARACTER

ST. LOUIS – Oct. 14, 2014 – The night that celebrates all that is right in sports will recognize one of the brightest sports people and stories of the year.  Mo’ne Davis, the first girl to earn a win and pitch a shutout at the Little League World Series, will be honored at the Musial Awards in St. Louis on Nov. 22.  The 13-year-old pitcher from Philadelphia is being recognized for the tremendous poise, maturity and overall sportsmanship she displayed during the tournament.

Hosted annually at the Peabody Opera House in downtown St. Louis, the Musial Awards – presented by Maryville University – honor Stan Musial’s legacy by celebrating the greatest moments of sportsmanship from around the country.  The event showcases remarkable stories of character, kindness, selflessness and integrity – qualities Musial, one of the all-time greatest baseball players, represented.

Davis will receive the Musial Award for Extraordinary Character – one of two special honors bestowed at the event.  She will join Hall of Famer Joe Torre, who is being presented the Musial Lifetime Achievement Award for Sportsmanship.  Sharing the stage with Davis and Torre will be eight other Musial Award winners who are connected to the year’s most inspiring stories of sportsmanship.

In August, Davis was thrust into the national spotlight as she became a trailblazer with her historic pitching accomplishments.  She handled her experience in Williamsport, Pa., and her newfound stardom with remarkable composure and class.  Even at age 13, she has become a role model giving kids hope for all that is possible.

Including Davis, only 18 girls have played in the Little League World Series and only five have taken the mound.  On Aug. 15, Davis pitched a six-inning shutout in the opening round of the Series.  She allowed only two hits while striking out eight in a 4-0 win for her Taney Youth Baseball Little League team.

The Extraordinary Character Award that Davis will receive at the Musial Awards was presented last year to the St. Louis Cardinals.  The team was recognized for living up to the standards Stan the Man set in a season dedicated to Musial following his passing in January 2013.  Now Davis will be honored for exemplifying the character, excellence and modesty Stan embodied.
