ORGANIZATION WILL RECEIVE THE MUSIAL AWARD FOR EXTRAORDINARY CHARACTER AT EVENT  CELEBRATING STAN THE MAN AND YEAR’S  GREATEST MOMENTS OF SPORTSMANSHIP

ST. LOUIS – Nov. 5, 2013 – The pinnacle honor presented at the 2013 Musial Awards will be bestowed on the St. Louis Cardinals.  On Saturday night (Nov. 9) at the Peabody Opera House in St. Louis, the team will receive the Musial Award for Extraordinary Character in recognition of the way it upheld Stan Musial’s legacy in the season after he passed away.  In playing with heart, class, character and respect for the game – and in reaching their fourth World Series in 10 years – the Cardinals lived up to the standard set by Stan the Man.  They adhered to the “Cardinal Way.”

The Musial Award for Extraordinary Character is being established in celebration of the renaming of the National Sportsmanship Awards to the Musial Awards.  It will be presented annually at the event to a sports figure or organization that embodies the class, dignity, generosity, excellence, civility and integrity synonymous with Stan the Man.  While the Musial Awards recognize specific acts of remarkable sportsmanship, the Award for Extraordinary Character is intended to honor an overall commitment to the virtues Musial represented.

Leading up to the Cardinals organization accepting the special award Saturday night, seven other recipients of the Musial Award will be celebrated for acts of extraordinary sportsmanship.  Among them is the University of Nebraska football program, recognized for befriending 7-year-old brain cancer patient Jack Hoffman and allowing him to score a touchdown in the Huskers’ spring game.  Jack, who won an ESPY for this year’s best sports moment, will attend the Musial Awards to present a Musial to the university.

The names of the 2013 honorees and their inspiring stories can be found at www.MusialAwards.com.
